Tender Steps of New York, Inc. (TSONY), in collaboration with Siembra Today, proudly hosted Portraits of Lineage: A Celebration of Cultural Stories – Part I at the Louis Kurtz Civic Center. This unique community gathering brought together individuals and families to reflect on identity, ancestry, culture, and the stories that connect generations.

More than an art experience, Portraits of Lineage created a space for participants to honor their personal histories, engage in meaningful reflection, and celebrate the diverse cultural threads that strengthen our communities.

Honoring the Stories That Shape Us

The event invited participants to explore an important question:

Who are we, and how do the stories of those who came before us continue to shape our lives today?

Through guided reflection, mindfulness activities, creative expression, and community dialogue, attendees explored the connections between family, culture, memory, and identity.

The gathering embraced the belief that every person carries a unique lineage filled with experiences, traditions, and lessons that deserve to be honored and shared.

A Morning of Reflection and Connection

The program opened with a warm welcome from Tender Steps of New York, followed by an introduction to the event’s guiding theme:

GEMS: Growth Through Earnest Collaboration and Mentorship = Success

This theme served as a reminder that growth often occurs through community, shared learning, and meaningful relationships.

Participants then engaged in a guided meditation and breathwork session designed to encourage reflection and create space for personal storytelling. The activity invited attendees to pause, reconnect with themselves, and consider the people, experiences, and traditions that have shaped their journeys.

The Gallery of Lineage

One of the highlights of the event was the Gallery of Lineage, a collective exhibit celebrating the richness and diversity of community stories.

Through portraits, visual storytelling, and shared experiences, attendees were able to reflect on the many ways culture, family history, and lived experience contribute to identity.

The gallery served as a powerful reminder that while every story is unique, our experiences often connect us in meaningful ways.

As reflected in the event program:

"Each portrait tells a story; together, they create a powerful narrative of resilience, identity, and connection."

Building Community Through Storytelling

At its heart, Portraits of Lineage was about creating opportunities for connection.

Storytelling allows communities to preserve history, celebrate culture, and foster understanding across generations. By sharing our stories, we not only honor our own experiences but also create space to learn from one another.

The event demonstrated how cultural storytelling can strengthen community bonds while promoting empathy, belonging, and collective healing.

Looking Ahead

Portraits of Lineage: Part I marked the beginning of what promises to be an inspiring series of community-centered gatherings focused on culture, identity, and shared experience.

Tender Steps of New York extends its gratitude to all participants, volunteers, partners, and supporters who helped make the event a success.

We look forward to continuing this journey together and celebrating the stories that connect us.
