Tender Steps of New York, Inc. joined forces with Siembra Today to co-present the first-ever Portraits of Lineage: A Celebration of Cultural Stories on Saturday, October 4th. Held at the Louis Kurtz Civic Center in Spring Valley, NY, this free community event invited families to share their personal stories, celebrate cultural pride, and connect through art and meaningful conversations. The event created a welcoming space for participants to explore their lineage and the stories that shape their identities.

Bringing Families Together Through Storytelling and Art

Portraits of Lineage was designed to foster connection across generations and backgrounds. Families gathered in an art-centered environment where they could express their cultural heritage through storytelling and creative activities. The event encouraged participants to reflect on their roots and the traditions passed down through their families.

Guided conversations helped attendees engage with one another, sparking dialogue about identity, history, and cultural pride. This approach allowed people to build bridges between different experiences while honoring their unique backgrounds.

The Role of Community Support in Making the Event Possible

This celebration was made possible by a Community Leaders Grant from the Citizens Committee for New York City. The grant enabled Tender Steps of New York, Inc. to offer the event free of charge, including all art supplies and light snacks for attendees. This support highlights the importance of community partnerships in creating accessible cultural programming.

Events like Portraits of Lineage rely on the generosity of grants, sponsors, and community partners who share a commitment to building strong, inclusive communities. Their contributions help organizations like Tender Steps of New York, Inc. bring meaningful experiences to families across Rockland County and New York City.

How Art Strengthens Cultural Pride and Identity

Art served as a powerful tool during the event, allowing participants to visually express their heritage. Creating portraits and other artwork gave families a tangible way to celebrate their lineage and share their stories with others. This hands-on approach made cultural pride visible and accessible to all ages.

The creative process also encouraged reflection and conversation. As families worked on their pieces, they discussed the significance of their traditions and the values they wanted to pass on. This combination of art and dialogue deepened the connection between participants and their cultural identities.

Building Community Connections Across Generations

One of the event’s key successes was its ability to connect people from different age groups and backgrounds. Children, parents, and elders shared stories and experiences, creating a sense of belonging and mutual respect. These intergenerational exchanges enriched the event and strengthened community ties.

By fostering these connections, Portraits of Lineage supported Tender Steps of New York, Inc.’s ongoing mission to build community and cultural pride throughout Rockland County. The event demonstrated how shared stories and creative expression can unite diverse groups and promote understanding.
